The episodes are seen mostly through the eyes of the book's protagonist, Carie bunny. She has just reached that wonderful age where everything is new and enigmatic. Although she questions everything and everybody, the answers supplied her are seldom within her grasp, but that never impedes her diligent search for the "truth."

Although Fieldsville is a small community, it has the basic ingredients to reveal most of society's virtues as well as its foibles.

Most of the respectable citizens of Fieldsville take great pride in their historic past which includes great explorers, saints, and illustrious men of science. Of course, Fieldsville has its disreputable inhabitants, like Molly Mallard, madam of the only house of ill fame, and Wheeze Weasel, the town drunk, not to mention Wild D. Coyote, whose reoccurring carnivorous habit is a shameful embarrassment to Mrs. Coyote. Fieldsville has its more lewd side as well, like Nutty's uncle, Mal Lester Squirrel. But Sheriff Dog does his best to keep the town respectable, so that all in all it is fairly representative of any community in which you may find yourself today.

Copernicus Starbuny, Fieldsville's noteworthy astronomer was first to discover the Black Hole in the Universe. His fantastic scientific break-through was celebrated near and far, until his wife, obsessed with the dubious virtue of cleanliness, cleaned his telescopic lens.

Swindlebee McSwine is the Mayor of Fieldsville. We wouldn't say he was crocked, but compared to his record a dog's hind leg is straight as an arrow. The Mayor will break out in a speech at the drop of a hat, which accounts for most of the citizens of Fieldsville going bareheaded. The mayor is pictured here delivering one of his "unprepared" speeches.
